Ecolabels and Environmental Declarations

ISO 14025

Ecolabels, standardised environmental labels of type I according to EN ISO 14024, are labels for products with particularly good environmental performance. They consist of a symbol or logo behind which certain agreed requirements are placed on the product. The requirements are generally selected and later adjusted so that only a certain percentage of the product range on the market can receive this label. ISO 14024 defines globally standardised core requirements for ecolabels. The Type I labels convey a simple, to-the-point message and are therefore aimed in particular at the end consumer. The requirements represent characteristic limit values or qualitative requirements, compliance with which makes the products significantly more environmentally friendly than products that do not fulfil the limit values and requirements. In German-speaking countries, eco-label programmes that contain award guidelines for building materials include the natureplus quality mark, the IBO test mark, the European Flower, the Austrian Ecolabel and the Blue Angel.

Objectives:

EN 15804

DIN EN 15804 (often abbreviated: EN 15804) ‘Sustainability of Construction Works - Environmental Product Declarations - Core Product Category Rules for Construction Products’ ensures that all EPDs for construction products, construction services and construction processes are derived, verified and presented in a standardised manner. It defines the core product category rules (core PCR). According to EN 15804, EPDs in the construction sector are intended to create the basis for the description and assessment of buildings. It thus concretises ISO 14025 for construction products.
